OUR HISTORY

Question: What is over 360 Years old and still active?

Answer: The First Congregational Church of Stamford

We are the church that was gathered in Wethersfield CT in 1635 and founded the city of Stamford in 1641. Now, in the 21st century, we are still bringing people together.

We are the church that draws people to our services. Here they receive the strength to lead and change their lives. Everything we do begins and ends with our faith.

Thanksgiving Feast
We are the church that shares a sit-down family style turkey dinner and all the fixings with hundreds of people who might otherwise be hungry or lonely on Thanksgiving day.

Help for the Homeless
We are the church that recognized the need for a shelter. We started it in our church basement, on Christmas Eve, with a half-dozen people. The shelter continues to meet the needs of hundreds of homeless individuals.

Community Leaders
We are the church that has sponsored refugee families from many countries over the years. During the first Persian Gulf war our church started the local support group. For years we have contributed to the New Covenant House, cooking for and serving the needy. We actively support the Stamford Community.

Moving Music
The choir and its music form an integral and rich part of our weekly worship.

Kids Ask to Return
We are the church that caters to kids. From our children's sermons to our Response Center during worship service, kids feel comfortable and challenged. There is a school for children and adults each Sunday. Our Children and youth meet often for fun and service to the community. They travel to New York, ski in Vermont, serve the Soup Kitchen, and participate in Advent and Lenten workshops.

Thrift Shop
We are the church that meets the needs of the surrounding community with low-cost clothing, house wares, furniture, and other accessories. The shop is sponsored by the Women's Fellowship and is open on Thursdays.

Library
We are the church with the unusually fine library with over 1,000 children's books plus video, tapes, magazines, and over 1000 adult books including reference, fiction, and biographies. Open whenever the church is open.

In Times of Need
We are the church that leads the community in times of need. Our interfaith services have drawn people to pray for peace during wartime, to celebrate the release of hostages, and to hope for racial harmony.

Fairs and Food
We are the church that has an annual Friendship Fair offering handicrafts, great bargains, and delicious food.

We Communicate
We are the church that offers live telephone hookups for our Sunday morning services for shut int. We also have listening devices for the hearing impaired in a number of our pews.
