The Bylaws of the First Congregational Church of Stamford make the following statement regarding membership: "Regular membership shall be open to any person who has been baptized, is a follower of Jesus Christ, or who has been confirmed in this church. An applicant may be received into membership on Profession of Faith, Reaffirmation of Faith, or by Letter from another church." The bylaws continue with specifics.
Information meetings are scheduled every few weeks. They are planned to inform those interested about the church: its history, programs, and other details. Those attending are not obligated in any way. However, there are usually some who may decide to become members. If they do, they are invited to meet with the Board of Deacons to become acquainted with members of the Board and to learn more about uniting with the church.
Reception of members usually occurs at a Sunday service. The applicant must have been baptized, be a follower of Christ, and publicly assent to the Confession of Faith and the Church Covenant. The Covenant is a sacred promise made by all members to support the church in all ways and to endeavor to walk in God's way. A person may want to maintain ties with another church and choose to become an associate member. Privileges are the same as for regular membership, but when the member moves from the community and is no longer worshiping in the church, the associate membership is terminated. Active members have the right to vote in church meetings and to hold office (this includes regular members and associate members).
